Biodiversity includes everyone

If we want to protect our biodiversity, we need to work together. We are all inhabitants of planet Earth*, and all have unique knowledge about it and how to protect it.

THRIVE Community

There are many ways to participate

  • Join our meetings
  • Start contributing data with the ObsIdentify app
  • Check our calendar for events in your area
  • Get in touch to share your ideas

Three pillars, one network

Where would you like to contribute?

Pillar

Engagement

We work together to protect biodiversity

We bring together people who care about nature or whose lives depend on it – farmers, foresters, fishers, hunters, urban planners, biologists, garden owners – across ages, education levels, abilities and backgrounds. Together we will:

  • Co-create engagement approaches that remove existing barriers
  • Train the trainers: shared training materials, so teachers, researchers, environmental officers and community champions can bring others in
  • Recognise contribution with incentives that keep people involved
  • Fill the gaps by inviting communities to observe the species and habitats science knows least about

Pillar

Policy

Make your observations count

THRIVE is finding where citizen science can feed into EU frameworks such as the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, the Nature Restoration Regulation and the European Green Deal, and turning that knowledge into tools people can use:

  • Workflow templates for citizen science projects that meet legal requirements and produce policy-ready data
  • An advocacy framework to build the case for citizen science with decision-makers
  • A web-based match-making tool connecting policy officers with citizen science practitioners

Pillar

Tools

Reliable technologies

Some policymakers and academics still doubt the quality of citizen science data. We’re building the evidence and the tools to change that:

  • Gather the best tools and methods, including modern approaches like eDNA, so citizens can move from data users to data producers and analysts
  • Harmonise and standardise how biodiversity observations are collected and shared, so data works across platforms and flows into open infrastructures like GBIF
  • Connect citizens and scientists so observations can be collected, checked, analysed and used

*THRIVE uses the term citizen not in connection to citizenship: for the purposes of our project, citizen means every human being.
